What coaching suggestion are out there for defending a spiral half series while in the bottom position?

My coaching suggestions are to keep the elbows in; palms out; head up.   While there are several ways to attack and defend a spiral ride, the bottom man does not want to give the opponent leverage on the spiral side. For that reason, we teach to attack the claw hand with our opposite hand while keeping our elbow in on the claw side and palm up. There are knee slide options, Granby roll options and push out options that are on our bottom position technique clips.

If you want more information on this, email back and we will post one this week as a featured technique. Any other question - feel free to ask them here!

Do let me know if there are particular issues your wrestlers are having in this or any other areas - and we can make specific clips targeted to answer your very good questions.

We have been focusing on bottom position, weight shifting and bringing ear to shoulder to seal off the half. For my less advanced wrestlers, more likely to lose the battle for position on the bottom, we need to change positions when the half is clawed on our neck. Any suggestions for position changes? Change over, knee slide, sit in... let me know what you think. Technique clip showing options for changing positions to beat spiral half would be great. John

John,

I created an informal video postcard for you to more immediately address your question. We've sent the postcard to your email box. If you're unable to see it or for anyone else who'd like more info - Copy and past this url to your browser:

Clip played. Good stuff and simple enough for quick application to reading the ride drills in the room. Thanks. John
